Honestly, I’m not so sure I’ve ever heard of a matted barrel M61, let alone encountered one. There are certainly matted receivers on some of the shot only M61’s. Do you have any pictures of this rifle?
I have not seen one either but found a 2013 post from Bert indicating they were made on special order and are ultra rare!
I have about 2400 Model 61 rifles in my data that were manufactured prior to 1947 when the octagon barrel configuration was available. None have a matted top flat on them. I do find it interesting that someone would order a matted barrel and not also get the receiver top matted as in the RFC example rifle. And as papalondog comments in the last post in the thread “almost too nice”! And he knows Model 61 rifles quite well.

The rifle in the older thread is not the one I have. This one has both the receiver top and barrel matted. The proofs are offset like the proof on the rifle in the thread. This gun is also 22 lr only
Would love to see some images and the serial number so that I can add it into my research.

Very nice looking Model 61 !! The wood on it appears to be better than the average Model 61. I also like the fact that it is one of the “W” marked Winchesters.
That last picture of the magazine tube retaining ring you added is a real game changer! Now that the rifle is “suspect”, proceed with caution!
