Hello,
if this information is available somewhere, I have not been able to find it, neither here or by compulsing Ned Schwing’s book on the subject.
I do not think the factory information regarding these 22LR guns is available, but has it been possible to determine that number (or an approximation of it) through the surveys?
Many thanks in advance
Gilles
Hello Gilles,
The information that Ned Schwing published is only an estimate of the production numbers through serial number 713199 (March 10th, 1926). Because his superb reference did not cover the late production Model 90 and 06 rifles, that is the primary reason why I began to survey the rifles that were manufactured from March 11th, 1926 through November 23rd, 1949 (serial numbers 713200 – 854747).
In the late production period, Winchester assembled a total of 141,548 rifles that were a mix of Model 90, 06, 62, & 62A rifles, all using a Model 90 serial numbered receiver frame.
Currently, a total of 1,302 of those 141,548 rifles have been surveyed (713200 – 854747 serial number range). The production totals break down as follows;
Of the 1,302 rifles surveyed thus far, 818 (62.83%) of them are Model 90s. That extrapolates to an estimated total of 90,314 Model 90 rifles assembled in the 713200 – 854747 serial range.
Of the 818 Model 90s, 255 (31.17%) of them are 22 Long Rifle. That extrapolates to an estimated total of 28,154 assembled in that cartridge. Keep in mind that my survey numbers do not include any of the Model 90 22 LRs that were manufactured in the 1918 – March 1926 time period.
