Other than the fact that this is an early first model 1890, what makes it so special??

I handled rifle this at a recent show. The receiver, hammer, and butt plate have all been refinished. The butt stock has also been replaced.

Thanks for the info Austin.

And do keep this in mind.   The rifle most likely was purchased just a short time ago by this dealer for FAR LESS money and then marked up to be resold on his site.   Which raises the question about what the real value of any of these rifles are.

Michael

Here are some more examples of the “dealer markup” seen on guns and thus the impact on “what is the correct value” for any rifle.

Model 61 w/ Box:  Sold at Poulin in October 2018 Lot 3368 for $1762.50  Now offered on Guns International for $3500  https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/winchester-rifles-model-61/winchester-model-61-in-original-picture-box.cfm?gun_id=101149748

Model 61 Magnum w/ Box:  Sold at Poiulin in October 2018 Lot 3366 for $2702.  Now offered on Guns International for $3700.  https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/winchester-rifles-model-61/winchester-model-61-magnum-new-in-box.cfm?gun_id=101149746

Michael,

Thanks for the dealer mark-up examples.  I can see covering expenses and getting a fair profit, but the mark-up on these two examples seems very excessive to me.

That’s interesting as mine was also manufactured in June of 1899. Out of curiosity how far is your serial number from 780?

I have 2 with the broken R “MANUFACTUPED” address. Serial# 67811 and 73873, both with 24″ barrels.

I bought one 2 years ago for $3,500.  Clean unmolested gun with some case color and a lot of the blue.  Mine is in WRF.Win-1890-L.jpgImage EnlargerWin-1890-R.jpgImage Enlarger It used to be a parts gun would bring $1,000.

Hi Chuck,

Thank you for answering my question with pics to boot!  That is a good looking .22 WRF!   What percentage of finish would you say remains on its metal and wood?

I’m not good at percentages.  The wood has not been messed with other than oiling.  The barrel and magazine have more that 50% of the blue.  The receiver is gray (not silver) with some color left.  Bore is bright with only very minor pitting.  Shoots good.  The price I paid was more that I really wanted.  This is pretty much retail for this gun.  I bought it from a dealer that usually gets top dollar for his stuff.  Years ago I bought another one in Vegas for $300.  The person that had it did not know what he had.  He wanted $350 and when I asked him what he would take he said he didn’t bring the gun to take home so he lowered the price to $300.  Later I sold the gun to Paul Vanderlinden for $1,500.

Thanks for your response, Chuck.  I agree with your appraisal in terms of having more than 50% finish on the barrel and magazine.  I think it has a considerable amount of color left mostly on the left side, and about half that on the right side…most of which has faded.  I think you did alright on the price, too, but I have never purchased a case colored Winchester.

Have a great day,

James
