Hello all,

new member here, first post – hopefully it’s interesting for you guys.

I have what seems to be a winchester model 62A with a custom nickel-chrome plating job with multiple proof marks a mark on the barrel that says “A Kind Gummersbach” (likely the gunsmith that did the finish-job), and it seems to have been re-stocked.

The serial number on this rifle is puzzling me as it is 655591 and as far as I know they only manufactured around 409XXX rifles.

Im wondering if I have some sort of post-production special order, or a post-production parts rifle of some sort. If anyone has any information on this or could point me to the right direction I would appreciate it.

kind regards,

A. FL337

Welcome, FL337! What you have may be what we call a Frankenchester. Could be an 1890 receiver and a 62A barrel. My reference books are STILL at an undisclosed location but that seems the best possibility based on my increasingly feeble mind. Can’t help with the inscription, looks like a cool rifle. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Mike’s description of “Frankenchester” appears to be the case.  Your receiver is from a Model 1906 (hence the “B” under the number), the buttstock is from a Model 1890 and the barrel is from a Model 62A, and then it was chromed……

All those parts are basically interchangeable so it should be a good shooting rifle.  Those are unusual proof marks on the barrel and receiver, if you can post some clear, close-up pictures we might be able to give you more info about them.

Thank you both for the information.

oddly enough, that’s music to my ears. I purchased this rifle so that I could use it for small game and not worry about damaging an original rifle.

I have a model 62 made in 1932 with a 4-digit serial# (2250) and I was always worried about tripping in the woods and cracking the stock or something along those lines. (I still plink with it, I just don’t want to be trekking the woods with it) I don’t have to worry about damaging this “frankenchester”.

kind regards,

A.FL337

based on the inscription on the barrel (A Kind Gummersbach) I figured the gun was in Germany at one point so I looked up German proof marks and I may have found them. could be wrong but they look very similar.

not sure about the one that looks like an “interstate 80” symbol
