Bert H. said I would also carefully clean-up the rest of the rifle, but not refinish it.
Refinishing wouldn’t make sense without replacing the splintered buttstock; easy to put more into it than the finished product would be worth. Isn’t Taylor getting close to $400 for the relining job alone?

Dale,If I were in your shoes, I would have it relined to 22 Long rifle, and then shoot the heck out of it. I would also carefully clean-up the rest of the rifle, but not refinish it.

p.s. where in Washington are you located?

Would I still be able to shoot 22 long? I’m in Gig Harbor.

Is the Swiss butt original to this rifle?
No it is not, but it is of little consequence to the value of the rifle. Swiss butt plates were a very common item on the Single Shot rifles, and were even standard on the Special Single Shot Rifle variation. Approximately 1:9 Single Shots had a non-standard butt plate.

Dale,
You are actually located quite close to me.
With a new liner chambered for 22 Long Rifle, you can shoot 22 Short, 22 Long, or 22 Long Rifle, but as Clarence mentioned, finding 22 Long ammo is difficult at best, and the 22 LR is an inherently more accurate cartridge.

The rifle has sentimental value to me. It belonged to my dad, who gave it to my brother in law before he passed. At the time I wasn’t a gun guy but have taken up the sport in the last couple of years. My brother in law gave it to me a month ago. Thought it should have it. The story goes that my dad found it in a field when he was young, probably in the mid 1930’s. The gun had no main spring and wouldn’t cycle, so he would load it close the breech and hit the hammer with a hammer to make it go bang. What fun. I intend just to clean it up and get it back in shooting order. Bert’s suggestion that I reline to 22LR makes since to me. It will be fun to see how well it shoots.

Bert,
Yes, your about an hour up the road. When I get the rifle done I could bring it up so you can have a look.
