I took my model 90 to a gunsmith to get the once- over and a cleaning before I fire it. 22 short is stamped on it.
Gunsmith says it won’t feed 22 short, but will feed 22LR all day. What’s the best way to verify if it’s chambered for 22LR? If it was indeed still chambered for 22short would I even be able to feed and chamber 22LR? I’m not sure I’d want to try firing the rifle without verifying the proper round. I had bought a box of 22short but again- uncdertain of what bad things I’d do to this rifle if I got it wrong.
This rifle has high sentimental value. It belonged to my great uncle who used it on squirrels and birds on his farm. He passed and it was handed down to my father who gave it to me just before he passed as well. I just want to fire it a few times just to say I did, then it goes into the gun case for a while.
I think I need a new gunsmith.

Merely insert a round into the chamber by hand; if it goes all the way in & the block closes on it, it’s been rechambered. That would also require the lifter to be replaced, to allow rounds to feed from the mag tube. Didn’t the gunsmith demonstrate this to you?

No he didn’t. And to be truthful I was in a hurry to get out of the shop and didn’t bother to question him further. I’ll check this out. I was thinking it shouldn’t chamber a lr round if it was original. Thanks for confirming.

The carrier may have been changed. If anyone has an 1890 that is not a LR, I don’t have any other than WRF, try single loading a LR in it. Some chambers were long enough to do so.
A Long chamber will accept LR, but the diff in OAL might cause feeding hangups, unless the carrier was modified. Unless it’s horribly eroded, I don’t think any Short chamber would accept LR; I’ve tried it on some single-shots.
