Some time ago I acquired a matching 62A gallery gun with correct magazine loading gate and all matching/original parts with the exception to the carriage. I belive the carriage was replaced at some point in the past, I am not sure. I had an issue with the carriage that came in the rifle and want to replace it with a carriage I obtained and am ready to put the replacement in the receiver.
Some time ago, I was able to obtain instructions from someone online who provided pics and detailed instructions as to how to put the carriage, hammer w/coil spring, and the circular piece that goes through to hold it in place but I cannot seem to find those instructions with pics. Can someone here on the forum provide details, with pics if possible, to put the carriage and hammer back together again? The issue at hand is how to reduce the spring pressure enough so that the circular piece can be put into the receiver to hold the hammer and carriage together.
I appreciate your help in advance.
Tom
When I had purchased the gun, the problem with the lifter(carriage) made itself evident immediately. When I searched for a replacement, I kept finding the word carriage being used to describe the lifter that moved the rounds from the magazine to the barrel. I kept seeing the word carriage describe that piece. I have no idea why they would have used that word but that is why I used the word in this post.
Still hoping someone can help me with the initial question. Thanks.

I always thought you were supposed to install the hammer, carrier and round bushing BEFORE installing the hammer spring and guide rod. It has been so long since I had one apart I don’t remember for sure though.

Thank you Chuck for the video about the 1890 takedown. I started watching at the 5:45 mark as mentioned. The model 1890 in the video has the leaf spring which is a different set up than my 62A. As mentioned in the video, the 62A has a round strut and a coil spring which fits over the strut. The coil provides the power that pushes the hammer forward to strike the firing pin and that spring is really strong. I could only wish my set up had the one in this video as I could just loosen the tension screw then loosen the screw holding the main spring. The set up I have involves a round stut and spring(kind of like a cars main spring and then a strut fitting inside but on a much smaller scale). On the 62A, the hammer has a countersunk round indent where one end of the strut fits into. The other end of the strut fits into a round hole that sits at a 90% angle from the bottom tang. When putting this strut and spring back on, the strut has to go into that hole in the tang FIRST, then it is placed into the countersunk hole on the rear of the hammer. The problem is that the hammer and carrier when lined up at this point are too far forward of the hole in the reciever where the bushing goes through the reciever, hammer, and carrier which line up with this hole. The spring is so strong, you cannot pull them backwards by hand enough to insert the bushing into the left side of the receiver and through to the other side, thereby holding the hammer and carrier in place.
There is a way to release the spring tension at this point so that you can put both hammer and carrier into the slot in the receiver and then put the bushing in the left side of the receiver through to the right side. I cannot get the hammer and carrier backwards enough so that they line up with the hole in the receiver where the bushing goes through to keep them in place because the strut spring is so strong that I cant pull the hammer and carrier back far enough to line up the holes and then put the bushing in to hold them in place. There is a way to take the tension off the spring and I cant remember how I did it the first and only time I took the carrier off and then put it back on.
One of the members here on the site knew a guy who had a video showing exactly how to do it and I was able to see the video and do the job. I cant find the link now to that video and that is what I am searching for. Or, to find someone who knows how to do it. At this point, it is a simple matter of finding a way to compress the strut spring just enough so that the hammer and carrier can be lined up to insert the bushing through the receiver.
If anyone can find the proper way to do this please respond in kind.
Thanks again,
