i recently picked up a model 62 (no “A” designation) from an older gentleman, that is also marked 22 short. Serial number is 190xxx. It has a 17 groove hand guard and the loading area on the magazine tube is NOT the slice type that is found on gallery guns but rather a shorter version of the bullet shaped one found on regular 62’s. The loading area is shorter than a 22 LR round. I understand it should have been made in 47 and that would have been a 62 A model but there is no A on this. Any help would be much appreciated.
We ask that complete serial number be listed. The partial serial number you mention would be December 1946, which would ordinarily indicate that it should be a Model 62A. That stated, Winchester could have used a left-over Model 62 barrel to assemble your rifle. If you can, post several clear pictures of the barrel markings.

Ned Schwing postulates in his superb reference book that approximately 3% of the total Model 62/62A production was for the 22 Short only variation. I have seen no evidence to refute that theory. The 22 Short only variation is worth approximately 50% more than the standard variation in the same condition.
