I find myself in need of a piece of gum wood to repair the stock on this rifle. I’m not sure what type of gum wood Winchester used but nothing i find on the internet looks like what I have.
The grain is straight and the color is a reddish yellow.
I’m missing a piece about 1 inch x 6 inches on the for arm.
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks Jay

None of my searches turns up anything. Maybe I’m just not doing this right but gum wood sweet gum and heart wood searches. I can’t find any discussion on here.
I typed “gumwood” in the search feature and came up with this in less than 30-seconds…

Clarence is correct in that it is sweet gum heart wood. It is very difficult to find nowadays since it is a “junk” wood. Some of the local sawmills in the south will get it occasionally for use on pallets, shipping crates, etc. but it is not preferred.
I have found that some Poplar trees are a similar match in both grain and density (especially the sap wood) but you will have to stain it to match the color. Poplar takes stain like a sponge so practice on scrap first. By “reddish- yellow” color I assume you mean orange-ish ;-). It is an odd color but I have been able to mix a few commercially available Minwax stain colors to match. I am sorry I don’t remember the color names and ratios though.
Good luck with your project.
