custom 06Image EnlargerHello all… Okay, here’s by far the most interesting and unique Winchester model 06 that I’ve ever run across.

It looks like someone extensively modified a model 06 into something that resembles the offspring of an 1890 and a Model 63.   The usual fore-end has been replaced with a fixed unit that roughly follows the styling of a 1903 or a 63, with two slightly raised metal tabs added (one on each side) to facilitate the operation of the action.   Yes, it’s confusing, trust me I was completely befuddled the first time I saw it, but it also took me about 2-seconds to accept that I wanted it, and that it was coming home no matter what.

The quality of the work is exceptional, as is that extent of the work right down to the fine rust blue finish.  This was not a minor project, which is evident if you look at the Hi-Def photos I linked below.  The only minor issue mechanically is that the action tabs need to be worked with a bit of a purpose and some force for the hammer to stay cocked reliably.

Okay, as existential as this may seem, I’m in love with this thing to the point where I’ve stopped asking “why” and have just accepted the fact that it “is”!

I would love to hear if anyone has seen anything like this before, or if anyone has any clue as to who may have done the work.

Thanks, Alex R.

Cut and paste the link above into a browser if you want to see a hi-def photo stitch of multiple angles of the rifle, but you may have to click on it to make it full size.

I like it too, though amazing anyone would spend what these mods must have cost. Maybe it belonged to a custom gunsmith building it to please himself.  The longer buttstock overcomes the one shortcoming of the ’06, it’s short LOP.

Interesting, a niche of its own. Only issue I see, is operating the action, it looks like it leaves a mark on the receiver.

Clarence, you have to remember these were generally made for kids, hence the short stock. I have 10 M1906’s and find it very difficult to shoot them. I’m 6’2″, and have long arms. As for this modification, all I can say is WOW!!! Big Larry

I don’t blame you for deciding to make it yours.  Very interesting custom 1906. The work does look well executed. Thank you for sharing it – and hi def pics are always a pleasant surprise!

Yes, I too, like unique and creative pieces like this one.  I would greatly enjoy that initial experience of puzzling over just what it was and how it worked.

Well… honestly, the first time I saw her I just buzzed right past because I thought she was either 63 or an 03. Then, when I panned past it again, I noticed the hammer and peep sight so I just sort of did a slow motion inventory of what I was seeing until it started to make some sense.  The best way I can describe it is that it was like trying to get into that HBO show “The Wire” by starting halfway through episode three!  Eventually however, it all clicked together and as my mental fog cleared I went from wondering “what the heck?” to asking “why..?”, followed pretty quickly by me just shaking my head and thinking “yeah, she’s mine”… LOL!

In all seriousness, I don’t think anyone has ever held her to their shoulder and not immediately fallen in love with her.  Maybe it’s just the quality of the work or perhaps it’s simply the absurdity of the modifications? Ultimately though, all I can say is that she’s just awesome!

It is a joy to be that enamored with a piece – and then end up owning it sweetens the experience greatly.

Pity there’ll never be any way to find out who performed this transformation…or why.  Larry’s complaint about the “boy” length stock is part of the answer, but not the largest part.

Hi Clarence. Forget the rifles. I am back to Smith and Wessons.  Big Larry

I’d LOVE to have a well-used one to shoot, but not a “minty” one at all.  If Larry had one, it probably would be mint, but I don’t think he cares for the BP models.

I’d love a less-than-minty one to shoot also.

I finally got to look at these pics on my big monitor and it took a second to notice the action bar re-make…that’s pretty cool and was definitely someone’s big project they must’ve worked on for a long time.

Were you able to get any story on it?

No Sir. The earliest revolver I have is a 1902 1st model 38 M&P, and it’s not mint.  Big Larry

That’s too bad, it would be neat to talk to the smith who made that!
