I recently saw a discussion about a 61 serial number and a question was asked whether there was a letter A under the number. I had to leave at that point and have been unable to reestablish that discussion. I have a 61 mag with a serial number with an A beneath the number. What is the significance of the A? My sn is 342991. About fifty years ago I arrive late at an auction as the auctioneer was holding it up for bids. I did not hear it described so I thought it was just a .22. When I got home and was going to shoot it I discovered it was a magnum. Really bummed. Thankfully I kept it and later found what I had. Paid $ 95. Occasionally a blind hog will root up an acorn.

According to the Ned Schwing Book on page 33: it explains that the “A” marking referred to a modification to the breech bolt to improve the firing pin.

Hope this helps.  Roger
