Hello Russ,
The dates you see marked on the barrel are the Patent dates associated with the Model 1890 and Model 1906. The serial number on the lower tang and on the bottom of the receiver frame will tell us precisely when your Model 1906/06 rifle was manufactured.

Thank you for responding Bert.
The information I received from a site said the manufacturer date was 1927. I can’t understand how that could be with Patent dates of 88 and 92.
Here’s the serial numbers for two similar rifles.
707530 (with an A below it)
758458
Both model 06
I appreciate any thoughts.

Russ,
S/N 707530 was not manufactured as a Model 06. The “A” below the serial number positively IDs it as a Model 90 (as originally manufactured). S/N 707530 was manufactured in September 1925. S/N 758458 was manufactured in September 1927.

I was going to say, the “A” marked M1906’s are scarce and very early rifles. I have a M1906A in my meager collection. # 103480 A , was shipped 2-18-1908. These scarce rifles had the type 3 receiver and were 22 short only. Only made a couple years before they went to the 22 S,L,LR, types. I have only seen 3 of these rifles, and I bought one. The best of the 3, and even at that, it’s not a perfect rifle. Big Larry
