I have a 1890 Winchester that has an original rear sight that I do not like.  It has a screw up front, where the dove tail is located and one in the rear.  What is the proper procedure for removing this sight?

Does it look like this?  Unscrew the front screw.  The rear screw is for elevation.

The “screw” you are trying to loosen fills the dovetail slot and can be difficult if it has rusted tight. A long and liberal soaking with a good penetrating oil, some light tapping and even heat with a heat gun can sometimes help.

Also, turn it clockwise to tighten the sight, counter-clockwise to loosen the sight.

(thanks RJ) 😉
