Just curious, Have you ordered a Cody Letter for it? I’d be anxious to see what it says.
Probably $2-5 buck worth of engraving.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Here’s the dope on the Mod. ’87 Mod. 1887 ser#50367, type- shotgun, guage-12, barrle length-30″, rubberbutt plate, sling and swivels, barrel engraved $4.00, coin silver shield on side of stock, rec’vd and shipped Feb.23 1893 , ord. #14495. Cool shotgun and it’s all there except the sling. Now I need a sling for a mod. 1887, anybody got a spare.

A nice beauty you got there, most assuredly scarce if not rare with those features. Just curious is the “coin silver shield on side of stock”, is it blank? Or was it engraved with anything?
I doubt you will ever find a matching 130 year old leather sling for it!
Sincerely,
Maverick

The silver shield is blank. Maybe someone has a sling or a reasonable replacement of one. I have an original sling and swivels on a 122 year old mod. ’94, so it’s only difficult but not impossible

I wish someone could come up with contact information for Charles May. I know he has or had one of the best collections of 1887’s that I have seen. These shotguns are hard to find in good condition let alone with the features of this shotgun. Charles had a few engraved ones.
Tim, I did think you might know since you knew he passed away. I had been trying to find him so I could pick his brain. The numbers on his business card weren’t any good. I don’t need to know where his guns went. I was just curious because I’ve seen more nice 87’s on the market the last few years than normal.
Chuck, Yes, I have noticed some nice ones going over the auction circuit, etc. Not something I collect, so usually pay little notice. I was surprised to read he died in 2018, unless the obit had a typo in it. I had no close dealings with Charley at the Cody show, but was favorably impressed with him the little I had. Hate to say it, but some hard earned knowledge slipped away along with a darn nice fellow. Tim
