Fall 2021
A First Model 1873 Renewed by Dwight Kelley

I was truly amazed a rifle in this condition could be brought back.  I would have labeled it dead and decomposed.  What a transformation.  It’s difficult for me to believe that some sort of magic wasn’t used.

What remains of the gun on the day if left the factory?  If it’s no more than the rcvr., it hasn’t been restored, it’s been “re-created.”

Clarence – my read of the article was that all the metal parts were retained and refinished.  When he initially evaluated the condition of the rifle, he states he was surprised to find the bore was quite good.  He describes how he repaired and refinished the wood.  The only change made was that the dust cover was missing and he was able to find one on Ebay.

In that case, “restored” is quite justified.
