OfflineLate to the party, but I have a few modern Win rifles that do use Phillips screws on the BP (even a couple commemoratives)….none of them have that center “post” or obstruction though….what was that, OP?
I didn’t see further talk about it but I think you mentioned getting it out?

OfflineI believe he got them out.
The only reason I can think of for someone to do that is to prevent the butt plate from being taken off. Having said that, I REALLY would like to see what is under the butt plate now…..

Hello everyone. I have been lurking here for some time and just got a guest membership (For now). I’m going to start out with a question about buttplate screws. I know. Not the most exciting thing. I have a 94 44M that is in need of some love for it’s wood parts. I have dissembled it totally because it is also in need of a good cleaning. The butt plate is steel and as far as I know, is the factory butt plate. When I went to remove it to start the process of refinishing the stock, it had what I thought were phillips screws holding it on. These screws would not take a phillips bit so I looked a little closer. In the middle of the cruciform where the tip of the bit would go is some type of stud or nail. It comes up almost flush with the top of the head of the screw and will not allow a bit to enter the slot. At first I thought this was some kind of DIY thing but upon looking closely, it seems like this is how they are supposed to be. I’ve never run across anything like these screws. Does this sound like a normal thing? If so, what would be the process for removing them? Does it require a special bit or tool? It’s a pretty cool gun but it’s had a working life and it shows and I want to clean it up a bit. I’m going to try to get some photos soon to post here.
Thanks for looking!
Umm, They may very well have been what we call “anti-theft, anti- vandalism” screws. They require a special bit to install or remove them. They come in all shapes and sizes to include Phillips, Torqz, and Allen head. Each one needing the correct size and shape for use. You see them a lot in commercial construction where they don’t want people messing with things, think public restroom stalls and doors. If some one tried to remove them that center pin prevents that and they may have tried to jam a regular bit in there and folded said pin over. just my 2 cents.

Hi Bert-
While definitely NOT a classic lever action rifle, on the Model 70, Phillips butt plate screws start turning up, mixed with slotted screws in 1961 and by 1962 they’re pretty much all Phillips head. This is with the composition (plastic) butt plate that had replaced the steel “widow’s peak” plate in the late 1950s.
Best,
Lou
I saw something yesterday I can’t recall seeing before, it was a plastic widow’s peak butt plate on a 94. It looked right, perfect fit. Wish I had taken notice of the screws. The more I think about it I wish I had taken a picture.

OfflineI concur with Louis. 1962 is when I see the phillips head butt plate screw being used on the Model 70. I have also noticed this on the Model 37 Shotgun. My 1966 Model 88 has phillips head butt plate screws as well. Not an expert on the Post 1964 Winchesters. But, from what I can tell they were equipt with phillip head butt plate screws.
