Have parts for a pre 64 model 70. Decided to put it together, in 270 cal, after buying the rest of misc. parts. Had a smith put  barrel on and it shoots great. But rifle doesn’t have that smooth action that my other 70’s have. And putting/clicking safety on is at best very stiff. I guess Win. 70’s were all factory fitted way back when.

My question– Are there any books or manuals out there, that I can buy to help me get that smooth action in my “rebuild”?

       Thanks

Bob;

Not sure about books or manuals on rebuild. The center receiver screw if over tightened can cause a small bind in the action thus effecting smoothness of the action. This screw should only be snugged up, not over tightened. Can not help on the safety although I had a pre-war 70 that a gunsmith replaced the safety with a post war safety. Safety never did loosen up.

All the Model 70s I’ve ever handled were always pretty “Stiff” and only loosened up after some use and wear. But if you think about it, a “stiff” safety is a safer mechanism to have. If you can just easily flip through all three stages of the safety, then the gun is not as safe as it could be or probably should be.

But I would also add that there is something completely different between a “stiff” safety and one that is “bound up” or overly hard to move. In that scenario a good oiling is probably in order. Also the safety itself may need good cleaning, as it may have grim or a burr in it.

Normally while hunting, I will generally leave the safety off, and have it on when transporting the rifle. One of the largest 8 point buck I’ve ever seen was when I was 12 years old. It was late December and my old man stuck me in a stand all by myself, while the rest of the hunting camp went off to put the dogs out. All the activity getting ready to run dogs jumped three different 8 point bucks and three does that were in a group. They were flushed to my stand and came out 20 yards at my shooting lane. All six deer came out at 20 yards and stopped. I scoped the largest rack 8 point, which was about a 140-150 inch deer, and here in Louisiana is a trophy buck. Had it dialed in and CLICK! The safety was still on. The deer heard the click and bolted. By the time I could get the safety off they were all gone. So I had to run a back to the base camp and get on the CB to get everyone to where I was at so we could get the dogs on their scent. Which took 30 minutes, as soon as the dogs got there they jumped on the scent, and we had a race all day long. But the dogs ended up only tracking one of the smaller sized doe. So from then on I’ve always deer hunted with the safety off, within reason now mind you.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Safety OFF while hunting?

Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.

Clarence

Thanks for getting back to me,

Yes Bolt does match receiver. I’m getting some pretty good advice here.

By “stiff” do you mean the safety it difficult to engage?  It that’s the case there’s a reason for it.  It should not be “stuff”, per se.

TYKE

   Yes stiff ,almost to point of not being able to engage. Going to take apart and check if plunger and spring are free to move. That must be the glitch causing problem.

   Thanks ,

If the sear face on the FP has been altered or warn it, in essence, moves the FP slightly forward and therefore the safety notch is also moved an equal distance forward inhibiting the full rotation rotation of the safety lever.
