Larry,

Cycle the shell and when it jams stop a see what is jamming. Is the shell being jammed between the chamber and the carrier or the bolt? Is the carrier pushed down lower than it does when its cycled to the same spot without the shell?

Thank you all

To me Bob it looks like your spring is more round on the very end, where mine comes to more of a point.

I did look at homestead but when you select any parts they show out of stock.

Iv’e asked the seller for better pictures of his but he seems reluctant to provide them but we will see.

Would anyone here have an original for sale would also like to buy an original carrier hook if available.

If you have one but not for sale could you give me overall length of it and also height of the end.  And maybe pictures of the tip from the side just to compare to mine and Bobs.

Thanks again

The lever is basically locked at full open.  As soon as I open the action and a shell pops into the carrier the lever is locked it won’t let me close it at all. It does not appear the shell is the issue at all.  Yes the carrier does not raise quite as high when the shell is in it, but I cannot see why the lever is jamming up.

By the way in my prior post it was the eBay seller I ask pictures of.

The thing I do to get the shell out is push down on the top of the shell to get it back down and alined with the mag tube then the lever is free an I can close the action, which pushes the shell back into the mag.

Larry       Check that the carrier is held up by firm spring pressure as you close the lever.  the cartridge should be well in to the chamber before the lever forces the carrier down.  The spring then slips over the cam on the carrier and holds it down to receive next cartridge.  Have a good look at Bob’s photo.

I think both of the carrier spring ends look a bit worn, should be more of a triangle.  Spring could be weak too.   You will work it out  The rattle may be the loose carrier.         Eric

Not sure why but my last 3 posts were awaiting moderation.  They currently are still awaiting moderation but now they do not show any text. Did I do something wrong?

Anyway a bit of an update.  I went ahead and filed the very tip of the Carrier Stop Spring so that it is a little more rounded.  Reinstalled and now at least the action will begin to move.  As before without a shell the action works fine.  With a shell as soon as I begin moving the lever to close the action the lifter/carrier drops and the shell is forced into the front of the action right below the chamber.  Based on this I have 2 questions

1.  Is it the Carrier Stop Spring that should hold the lifter in the upward position until the shell begins to enter the chamber?

2.  Would someone have a spare  Carrier Stop Spring that they could measure the overall length and also the height of the tip so I can see if mine is out ofor spec?

   Thanks

Larry    It is the carrier spring and the spring ONLY that holds the carrier in position until the cartridge is half way in to the chamber.  If the carrier is not fully up, the nose of cartridge will hit below chamber.    All Winchester lever action repeater rifles from 1866 on have springs to hold carrier in position during loading.    Eric

Larry,

Have you tested the carrier spring yet? The carrier spring holds the carrier up and go down slightly when the bolt move ahead a little. There are two narrow rails on the top of the carrier on each side at the back of it. As the bolt comes forward, the bottom of the bolt will ride on them pushing the carrier down a little. It should stay at that level until the bolt moves forward about half way with a shell then the carrier is pulled down by the link . If the carrier is going down before that, then the carrier spring is weak.

You also said it locks up with a shell in it but its not the shell jamming. So while trying to lever the shell in and it locks up you keep pressure on the lever and the shell is loose?

OK I have it fixed – I was able to find a carrier-carrier hook-and stop spring for sale. Received them yesterday. First tried just replacing the stop spring to no avail, so tore it down and replaced the carrier, carrier hook, and stop spring and now fully functional. There was some wear in both the carrier and hook piece. Thanks to all who tried to help.
