the 94 had lots of active red rust. It seemed the safest path to take.
I’m still unable to figure out how to post pictures to this site but will do so if I can learn how.

Mark Novak on Youtube is a gunsmith who advocates dealing with red rust by disassembly to component parts then boiling (metal parts) in water for 30 to 50 minutes then using a carding wheel to remove the scale. Boiling stops and converts the red rust and carding reveals the what finish remains. Carding with a wheel or 4-O steel wool does not remove metal. In reassembly he advocates light gun oil. I have never used this procedure but I do like what he does and have watched a lot of his videos
