Some opinions on mounting a Williams Foolproof receiver sight om a 1946 (?) vintage m71 standard rifle would be welcome. The rifle is not drilled and tapped yet.
The rifle is more a shooter than a collecting piece. It has had the varnish removed and the magazine botton is drilled and have a sling swivel mounted. Obviously the rifle had seen some use.

Pete,
Your Rifle must be in the 23000 serial range. Winchester started drilling & tapping the Model 71 as a regular production step in 1947/48.
If the rifle is not factory drilled & tapped, I would not alter it. There are a lot of slightly later production 71s that are factory drilled & tapped. If you do decide to drill it, the Lyman No. 66 is a much nicer sight than the Williams.
