A gentleman called me wanting info to change 1890 22WRF to 22LR. I have the needed spacer to change the carrier to 22LR length, but I believe at least the barrel chamber must be relined, but I don’t know about the barrel. because the bullet size is smaller I believe it should be. What is the correct answer.
Thanks, Bill Brown
You may also run into feeding problems, The cartridge lifter shell cut out is .010″ larger in diameter along with the port through the receiver and the inner magazine tube. The bore is .003″ larger than 22 long rifle so accuracy will be marginal at best. Realistically, if you want a 1890 in LR, buy one. He can buy quite a few rounds of WRF for what the conversion will cost. IMO the money would be better spent applying it towards the purchase of a LR model. If you do the conversion and permanently alter the WRF barrel, you have lost all collectability aspects, devaluing the rifle. It’s his rifle to do with as he pleases but should be aware of the outcome………
