Heard a guy advertise several firearms on a local radio buy sell trade show. I call him up and ask about Winchesters. Sure enough he has a 30-30 and wants $400. I ask whether it is a rifle or carbine. “Oh it’s a rifle,” says he, “an old one.” So I make arrangements to go check it out in the evening. I drive 50 miles to his place. He answers the door and in we go. There it is, laying on the couch. Post 64 carbine in sad shape. I looked at some other uninteresting guns he had, and then made the 50 mile drive back home in the dark, dodging moose along the road. Had to look though. I guess I should have asked for the serial number before making the drive.
Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.
That sucks! I can try and make you feel better though…. as yesterday was also disappointing for me too. Earlier in the week I stumbled on a model 64 deluxe deer rifle in like new condition. After talking with the gentleman and FaceTiming to see the gun, I agree to buy it and give him his asking price. I ask when he’s available and he says not till Saturday. We agree to meet. I notice he also had a model 94 src and ask if it’s still available and if so could he bring that too. He says sure.
yesterday I get a text that says he has someone who is willing To give him asking price for the model 64 and the model 94- and he tells me’I am sorry but I have to take his offer, because he might buy something else I have’. I tried to explain that I agreed to full asking on the 64 and that if he remembers I wanted to see the other one also. He says ‘ well he offered me this morning’. Not even so much as a phone call for three days, or the common courtesy to offer me the same, especially since he agreed to our deal.
i replied that ‘I am glad I knew what type of person I am dealing with and that I would no longer reply to his listings( I would really like to flag them all but not sure I can bring myself to actually do that). I said that I only like to deal with people who keep their word and expressed my disappointment. It will probably go over his head but it made me feel a bit better. It’s sad that it ruined my day, and my morning- but you know how it is when you think your adding a proud new member to that family right?
i am sure we all have stories like this, but I thought it would make old logger feel better to know someone else shared some disappointment yesterday.
Bought a really nice Rem Hepburn at a show. Dealer said he had several more SSs just as nice (SSs, forgive me, are my main collecting & shooting interest), but hadn’t brought them to that show. I said, please send photos, I’m very seriously interested. He did–Polaroids. (Guess how long ago that was?) They looked great, so I committed not only to buying them, but to driving over a hundred miles to get them.
LITERALLY, as I passed through his front door, & saw them laid out on a table, I KNEW instantly I’d been focked! (Reblued & otherwise messed with.) I paid the guy a $100 (no shat!) to “compensate” the bastard for refusing to buy them, & then had the great pleasure of driving home another 100 miles after dark!
