I purchased a Winchester Mod 100 with a magazine that is not the correct. I will not work and it is not a model 88 magazine either I Think? The magazine in question will hold 5 – 308 win bullets for reference. The size is different and feed lips are different from model 100 or 88. Can any help identify this magazine. Thanks Todd I have pictures but can not get them on here.

Welcome Todd,

It looks like the early style Model 88 magazine to me.  The Model 100 has the square back on the follower to hold the bolt open on the last shot, the 88 magazine has a beveled follower.  The early 88 magazines were not marked as to caliber and had a stainless steel stamped follower.

Also, the 88 magazine will technically hold 5 rounds if you jam the last one in but they were designed for 4 and do not function well (if at all) with 5 rounds.

Awesome Thanks Bert for the help with the pictures.

I had found pictures of the 88 magazines looking very similar to the 100 magazines with stepped follower. That makes sense if they redesigned the follower on the 88. I was told that the 88 and 100 magazines were interchangeable. This magazine will not lock into the 100 rifle. Does that make sense? Thanks again for helping with my questions. Maybe i should add a Mod 88 to my collection 🙂

Aside from the bolt hold-open feature they are technically interchangeable and the 88 magazine should engage the catch in the Model 100.  I am not sure why yours is not without having the rifle in-hand.  The magazine does not appear to be modified.  Regardless, you are going to want to find a Model 100 magazine anyway since not having the bolt hold-open feature on the 100 is annoying.
