I recently received a letter from Cody about a model 1894 rifle.  Along with the typical information provided in the letter there was an entry that read,  10/21.  It then read, received sept 14 1903,  shipped October 22, 1903,  repair and return July 31, 1909.  The entry 10/21 was that referring to a date or is there another meaning that Winchester used and I’m unaware of?

A picture of the letter would help decipher it. Is it written on a separate line? What is it next to?  If the person interpreting the ledger believes that “10/21” is a date they would of written it as “October 21” but my guess is they are unsure of what it means in the context of the ledger and just listed as written.

1873man,

          The letter reads

38/55

octagon

trigger: plain

sights: Lyman hunting front

1/2 magazine

takedown

10/21

received in warehouse. Sept 14, 1903

shipped:  October 22, 1903

repair and return July 31,1909

sorry I’m not good with downloading the actual letter but the above is representative of the letter.  Any ideas?

One thought is someone was writing in the ship date for another gun on the wrong line and caught his mistake before finishing. You would need a copy of the ledger to see where its written to tell for sure. Call Cody and ask them for copy of the entry in the ledger. Did they put it quotes? If it is that is a sign they don’t know what it means and are relaying the notation or it is possible its a typo on their part.

Bob,  there are no quotes around the numbers.  They sit on a line by themselves.  Thanks for your input.

Nick,

Call the CFM records office and ask for Jessica. Ask her why there is no “Serial number applied” date, or an “Order number”, and to explain the “10/21” notation on your factory letter.

Bert,

That information was on the letter.  I will have to give Cody a call to check on the meaning of 10/21.  Thanks.
