In the Winchester catalogues starting in 1875 on page 2 they referred to them as “a cleaning rod will be found in the stock of the rifle, and is got out by opening a lid in the butt plate.” After paging thru catalogues til 1918 the only reference to wiping rods is in the parts list. So does that mean if you loose your cleaning rod that came with your rifle you have to order a wiping rod from the parts department? T/R

Kinda sounds like it to me. But I bet even in those days If you ordered a cleaning rod or a wiping rod they knew what you meant.
I haven’t looked into cleaning rods in while, but want to research them more. The only interesting item I’ve come across lately was a special order pull through bore cleaner for a Model 1876 in Winchester Express made in 1879.
