I have a Winchester 1886 barrel is marked 38-56 serial 12700 ish with octagon barrell. The cody letter i received says it was 45-90 with a round barrell. Any ideas here?

The most likely scenario is someone put a different barrel on it at some point.

First thing is to have Cody double check the records then post some good close ups of the barrel so we can determine it hasn’t been changed which can happen.
