I am new to this site, but have several pre 64 Winchesters that have not been modified, as they have been in the family for many years and purchased new back in the day and are basically NIB condition. My question is that I have been looking at at pre 64 model 70 varmint rifle in .243. Rifle was made in 1959-1960. It has a plastic buttplate, but has philips screws in it. All other Winchesters that I have slotted screws, no philips. I suspect the rifle has been altered. Any thoughts??
According to the Roger Rule book “The Rifleman’s Rifle” on page 152: “The screws for both steel and rubber butt plates were similar to oval wood screws with standard heads until 1962. Around serial number 545,500, these were replaced with phillips head screws.”
Hope this helps. RDB

1962 is the same time frame for the change to phillips head screws on the Model 69A also.
