Thanks to Heather & those who have made this possible…. Now, can someone with experience with CMP procedures give us a lesson on how to purchase ammo & firearms online? I keep hearing of used 52’s and 40’s being purchased at very reasonable prices… maybe firearms need to be purchased in person and then shipped to your FFL? Some clarity would be appreciated….
Ben, I am unsure of today’s specifics. Recommend you query now about the requirements. I recently deleted an e-mail from the CMP that gave the site to go to, but suspect starting with CMP will wind its way there. Not so long ago a long arm could be shipped direct. The 1911’s had to go to a FFL. But I think the government changed that under the previous admin. But please check now and don’t wait. I used to have the benefit of being retired Army until that came under suspicion as well. Tim
For rifle and Model 1911 purchases go to https://thecmp.org/ and click on the “Sales & Services” tab. There are detailed instructions on how to order and even some video links to walk you through the process. With the exception of the Model 1911 handguns, once you make an initial purchase with the CMP you are then in their system and only have to submit your club renewal and proof of participation in marksmanship activity once per year. In the past they have accepted your FFL (including a C&R) as an example of “marksmanship activity”. They have also accepted LEO annual qualification records and current military status as “marksmanship activity” as well as other types of shooting related activities.
For the first firearm order the following must be submitted:
1) proof of U.S. Citizenship (U.S. birth certificate, an enhanced driver’s license (no longer accepted as of 2/8/23), passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document (when using a military ID to prove citizenship, must be an E5 or above) that shows birth in the U.S. or states citizenship as U.S. Law enforcement status if you are a Federal officer.)
2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club (a copy of your current WACA membership card) WACA is now listed as an affiliated club as seen here – https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=clubDisplay&club=7906
3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity (any type of FFL, participation in any type of CMP approved shooting competition, shooting match or activity such as Appleseed or others, LEO annual qualification record or current military status as well as many other types pf participation)
4) a completed order form, including a new form 2A with notary
5) a copy of current driver’s license.
For rifle purchases, once the above has been submitted, the rifle is shipped directly to your house (even if you do not possess an FFL). This is allowed under the CMP Congressional charter (unless your state has a restriction on this). For the Model 1911, the handgun has to be shipped to an FFL holder and then transferred to the purchaser.
For purchases of non-firearm items such as equipment, clothing or ammo click on the “Shop Estore” button or go here https://shop.thecmp.org/
Like above, you will have to provide proof of age, proof of citizenship and proof of club affiliation. In the past, this was only needed on the first purchase of the year and the documents were then refreshed each year to remain current in the CMP system. I assume this is still the case but if not, it is a simple matter to provide the proof copies each order. All items are then shipped directly to the purchaser.
For online auction purchases the requirements are the same as the rifle and 1911 criteria above. The auctions typically contain the odds and ends (including Winchesters) that are in insufficient quantities to sell in mass. The auction site can be found by clicking the “Visit Auctions” tab or by going here https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/
Once you are in the CMP system you are also eligible to shop in person at the CMP stores located on base at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama (about 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta) and the store located at Camp Perry Ohio. The stores will typically have small batches of odds and ends rifles such as .22 target rifles, 1903 Springfields, Model 1917s, M1 Garands, M1 carbines, drill rifles, ceremonial rifles and others. I have shopped at both locations and found the best deals come from the stores, and you are allowed to handle and inspect everything prior to purchasing which is a plus.
Hope that helps.
