Hope to see many of you at the TGCA Show and Auction at the Waco Convention Center April 26-28, 2024. Second year at this location, walking distance from the adjacent Hilton and Sheraton hotels and some great restaurants! Will probably have 250+ tables of collectible firearms. TGCA is a WACA affiliated club, link to the TGCA home page is on our home page. John Vance puts on a great show, Saturday night auction is always a big hit. Mark your calendars!

You failed to mention the one attraction in Waco worth pulling off the Interstate to visit: the Texas Ranger Museum.
Yes sir! I’m still a bit put out because I didn’t make it by there last year. Several new exhibits since I was there last. Circle Grill used to be a great lunch stop but my new favorite is Rosa’s. Just happens to be across from the convention center.

I can’t remember the name of the restaurant that was on the circle before I35 was built but we always stopped there for lunch or coffee. Was it the Circle Grill back then? Last time I was there ..several years ago.. it was different and the food was awful. Things change. The new bridge and stadium ruined the view down the Brazos.
Ranger Museum is always worth a stop. I may try to attend the TGCA event. Is there a Website?

Maybe it wasn’t the Circle Grill. I just remember the old Cadillac out front. Was it Elite?

Mike, I had to look it up and yes, it was the Elite Cafe in the Fifties and Sixties. The original Elite Cafe was in downtown Waco and didn’t do well after the tornado, closing in the Sixties. The Colias brothers, who started and owned it, opened the one on the circle in 1941 and it thrived until the Eighties. That’s the one we’re remembering. Here’s a pic from the Baylor University collection. From the cars, looks like it was taken in the early Fifties.

Thanks, Bill. Looks like it closed several years ago. I would stop on the way to my brother’s deer lease for an old fashioned burger and fries, One of the later versions had artisan bread/burger buns, linen napkins & table cloths and upscale furniture. Best thing was it was priced about the same as the Denny’s across the road. I could also keep an eye on my hunting gear in the open bed of my old pickup.

The Bob Doherty exhibit hits a bit close to home. Ranger Doherty’s partner was an undercover DPS narcotics officer I’ve been bumping into for decades. A Denton County deputy sheriff (and former Denton PD officer) was also there and went on be a CID Captain at DCSO. I know both of them pretty well and after all these years it’s very hard for them to talk about. The account related in the exhibit is an accurate account as we’ll ever read. The Texas Monthly story has lots of good details but was written to sell magazines.

Funny you should mention keeping an eye on your pickup bed. Several years ago I made a trip for teal and doves to the playa lakes South of Amarillo, by myself in my Tacoma. It has an open bed. No way to lock up a cooler, ammo, etc. and the shotguns inside the cab would have been easy pickings for anybody with the slightest talent. Long drive so I stopped in Vernon for lunch but had to drive around until I found a place that could let me observe my truck from a window. Still, I was as nervous as a [lady of the night] in church and could barely gag down my sandwich. If I ever did that again, I’d have a double gun in a break-down case I could carry into the cafe with me. Anywhere on the Caprock, nobody would blink an eye. Can’t say that about Big D and in Austin I’d probably get indicted for making a terroristic threat..

Bill-
Reminds me of the old beater car I drove to Cody and back a few years ago. I’d sold my late-model pickup and hadn’t bothered to replace it-still haven’t. I still laugh about the guns in the trunk of that old Mercury being worth easily 10X what that old sled was worth. Probably one of the best cars I ever owned, never got a second glance except when someone confused my Grand Marquis with a Crown Vic police car. Motels are tougher than restaurants. I have learned to request a room overlooking the parking lot. I’ll tell the clerk I’m a salesman and my car has irreplaceable samples. My business name is vague enough they generally agree. After dinner I’ll park where my room overlooks my car.
Waco is only a couple hours away, I won’t have many guns there but they won’t be sitting in my car overnight. Convention Center and hotel parking lot seems very secure and well lit. Great venue for a collector show.

I think I’ve talked Higher Authority into coming with me to the Spring show. She wants to see some other stuff in Waco, so we’ll probably be there for Friday and Saturday night. Any advice?

Sounds good, Bill. I can recommend the Hilton, nice place literally a stone’s throw from the Convention Center. Not sure what she’ll want to do but there are some shopping opportunities close by. The Saturday auction is open to the public and always entertaining. Bar opens at 2, auction starts at 5 with predictable results.
Mike
ETA the new suspension bridge is adjacent to the Hilton, some local history points of interest and a nice place for a walk in good weather.
