A couple of months ago an acquaintance sent me a couple of texts showing several long guns. One was an 1873. Step Dads, Mom’s house several hours away.
The Winchester was one of 3 rifles I said I’d be interested in but didn’t have too much hope it would happen.
This past week he texts me pics again and I ask about the 73. He want’s to keep that one. I arrange to see it.
It looks all correct. born 1884. 38 WCF Maybe 30% blue left, pretty crisp markings. No sanding marks on wood or steel. Just a nice apparently unmolested rifle.
I made a fair offer that no one could dispute as being that. Didn’t pressure but let him know that I’d like to buy it if he decides. My offer would withstand any second or third offers by a couple of hundred.
Sat on my lap for 2 beers. When I left, I had to leave it behind, for the time being.

Not a total loss, he knows you’re interested and if he runs across another maybe he’ll give you a call. On top of that you had a couple of beers with a friend while talking about old Winchesters and such. If it’s meant to be, it will be. You may like the next one that comes along even better. Trust me, it happens!
