Just returned home from another great Rock Island Auction Company premier sale. Wow, what a collection of great Winchesters that sold. The star of the weekend was an 1886 S/N 1, the gun hammered for $ 1.1 million and is thought to be the highest price ever for a single gun. As always guns in great condition brought premium prices and others sold about average.
We have been discussing the sale of that rifle AND the Gold watch and provenance with the watch. The rifle all by itself did not “hammer” for 1.1 million. Best guess is that the rifle was 25% – 30% of the total amount of the package. The Gold watch sold for $1,000 when it was new in 1885.
