At the same place I found the boxed Win 62, just as I was leaving the owner pulled this Stevens 44 to temp me… and he succeeded. It’s a model 44… double set trigger, mid range windage sight, front Beaches combination… I pretty certain that it’s been restored (something I usually shy away from) and it’s in an obsolete caliber, “22-15 SS” (something I also shy away from). I still had to bring it home! I’m sure my wife will understand… 
If anyone here has a box of ammo, brass or dies, I’m in need. The single round pictured was from a customer that came into the shop right after I bought the rifle… he was going to buy the rifle. He wasn’t very happy… the shop owner said he had been beating him down for the last 6 months on the price and decided to sell it for less than his last offer… I got very lucky. Obviously, the guy with the round wouldn’t sell it to me… still, life is very good.

There is an empty box for sale but it is not real pretty. Also there are at least 4 cartridges for sale too. $9 to $14 each. Collectable Ammunition and American Civil War Relics.

These stories prove what I say about building a rapport with a brick & mortar gun shop. It also looks like the guy who was trying to beat the dealer down finally ticked him off, maybe he’ll learn the concept of carpe diem. I wonder if there are any shorter 22 CF rounds of a similar profile and case head measurements that will work. Looks like an old BP round, how old is the rifle?

I don’t see anything that would make me think that the stevens had been refinished. Thanks for showing us your new rifle, definitely the case colors look right to me.

My reference books say there are no cartridges that you can use to form this brass. A machinist could make some on a lathe with 3/8″ solid brass. Steven’s made a lot of really long and skinny cartridges.

The cool sights probably caught your eye, pretty wood has loosened my wallet on more occasions than I care to admit. Can’t quite afford a Purdey but I like looking at them!

Confirmed it’s a 47. Also stopped by Denny Hanel’s and he gifted me 10 pieces of brass and several projectiles. He also shared his favorite load.

Slowly making my way home from Reno… stopping at gun shops I haven’t been to in years… picking up a few trinkets here and there. My last stop of the day was at Wisner’s in Adna, Wa. I’ve known Jim since 1988. Worked part time at his dad’s shop for a few years. Leeroy just turned 90! He has been instrumental in compiling thousands of drawings of obsolete gun parts that keep our treasures functioning. Jim is continuing that legacy and I’ve been able to assist by providing some scarce parts for him to replicate.
Our conversation switched to the Stevens rifle I picked up and my enthusiasm about being given some brass & bullets by Denny… Jim got a funny smirk on his face and took me to his vault room and picked up a Stevens 44 1/2 rifle and showed me the caliber marking… 22-15 SS! Amazing…what are the chances? 😂
