This is a weird question. How far out of the scabbard is a lever action rifle supposed to protrude once fully inserted? Seems to me that I have seen them in old photos sticking out a few inches to a foot. Is there a rule of thumb. Thanks!

Don’t know if there’s a rule of thumb. But I would want the buttstock to protrude so that it would be easy to grasp the gun around the stock wrist and pull it out of the scabbard.

Thanks for responding Tom. I would think you are right that the ability to grasp it relatively quickly would be important. I also think wanting to the protect the rifle as best you can would be important too.

I make and offer saddle scabbards on my web site. As mentioned above, I make my Winchester carbine and rifle scabbards, just to the point on the comb of the stock. This way the gun can be extracted easily, when mounted butt to neck or butt to flank.
