This is a weird question. How far out of the scabbard is a lever action rifle supposed to protrude once fully inserted? Seems to me that I have seen them in old photos sticking out a few inches to a foot. Is there a rule of thumb. Thanks!

Thanks for responding Tom. I would think you are right that the ability to grasp it relatively quickly would be important. I also think wanting to the protect the rifle as best you can would be important too.
