I think gun show operators nationwide have taken notice of OGCA’s misfortune and their thoughtful response. We can’t depend on every gun show attendee to exercise good judgement and safe gun handling skills. I think gun shows are safer today because their operators took a hard look at their safety rules and made improvements as a result of the OGCA incident. Like it or not gun shows won’t happen without insurance. If we’re going to welcome the public to our shows we need to assume they know nothing about basic gun safety. Common sense isn’t something we can depend on today.

Ties are something We’ve done at the shows up here in Canada for quite a long time now. Originally the Gov’t wanted a mechanical “trigger lock”, but They reluctantly  relented and said ties would suffice. Apart from the obvious safety aspect they have other advantages, eg; some Moron picking up Your $20,000.00 deluxe ’94 that You have there for display, right behind the “PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH” SIGN” and proceeds to do the Rifleman rapid fire test. I once had a guy ejected from a show for picking up and cycling a $10,000.00 Wayne Driscoll, gold inlaid, engraved miniature 1894 that I had there on display only. Needless to say I was pissed. I don’t know why it is , but at nearly every show You attend, You will see some one pick up a gun, usually a shotgun, and point it at the ceiling, then proceed to swing it around, I guess this makes that person think They are impressing upon someone that they know how to handle a firearm. Many years ago at The Burford Ont. show We had someone do just that , They picked up a 12 guage , pointed it the ceiling , pulled the trigger and it discharged. Somebody across the other side of the hall yelled “OOOHHH”, after which there was complete silence. Luckily there were no injuries, except the ceiling of course, and a couple of guys vanity. Oh yeah they were both ejected from the shows for quite a spell. I like the ties.
