I have a few of them now including an 1886 used to hunt Beluga whales. It’s in great shape. I also have a Remington 722 that was used to hunt seals and sea otters in PWS. It’s rusty but still functional. Has a cool home made sling on it from the Native guy who used it for so many years. Yesterday I picked up a Marlin .375 that a guy used while guiding in the Bristol Bay area. He took lots of caribou with it, and said he never had a problem taking out bears with it. The 375 was made for 3 years by Marlin. 1980-83. Just over 16,000 produced according to the Blue Book. I have owned a couple of them and also a couple Winchester Big Bore 94’s. It’s a pretty good hunting round.

Hunters in Alaska have been taking game long before modern day guns – generally you just get closer with well placed shots. There are still a lot of hunters that use the Model 71 in 348 W.C.F. and the Model 1895 in .405 is also popular. Attached is a friend of mine with a nice bull moose taken with a Winchester Model 86 in 45-90. This bull was taken in Norton Sound (Nome area).

I used a model 71 to take a 9 1/2′ brown bear. It took 7 rounds. All but one knocked him down, but he got right back up rather quickly. He was close and I could have head shot him but wanted to save the skull which I did. Took a forked horn bull moose with that same 71 that fall. The moose only needed 1 shot.

Hey Burt,

That’s me in the photo with the moose!   I actually used a model 1886 in 40-65 to take that one.  I shot a grizzly this last spring with a vintage 1894 in 30 WCF.  Like Old Logger, I too have acquired “old” rifles out in Native villages during my travels.  Most are bolt action Winchesters, Remingtons, and Rugers in similar condition to the 722 he obtained- rusty!  Some are functional and others aren’t.  But they make good project rifles.  The only really vintage gun I ever bought was a Winchester model 42.  It had little finish left but still worked great.  For $15 how could it be a bad buy?

Mark – sorry I got the caliber wrong – as you know the photo was in a Collector story a long time ago – I thought I got the caliber from that article – guess it really doesn’t matter – the important part is that the moose was taken with an old Winchester lever! I admire taking the old guns out for some hunting – I have never done that. I used to get out for some hunting but always with a modern day firearm. By the way, I retired at the end of the FY – 45 years was enough. We will stay here but get out periodically to warm up – going to Florida on Thursday for a couple of weeks.
