Came into possession of this Winchester Model 94 recently and wondering if any of you can give me some information on it. From what I can fin on the internet it appears to be a model 94 from 1896.

Is that correct? Why does it have a set trigger? Can’t find any info on the set trigger.

Thanks for any information or insight you can provide!!!

What you have is a Model “1894” and it was manufactured in October of the year 1899 (not 1896).  At that time, a set trigger was a special order option.  Based on the pictures you provided, the trigger is in its “set” position.  I recommend returning it to its un-set position.

The pictures also show that the butt stock has been replaced (not factory original), and that the rifle is in hard used (well) worn condition.

Thank you for the info. I never thought the butt plate seemed right for it’s age, I always thought it should of had a metal butt plate on it.

Unfortunately the set trigger is no longer functional, it just flops around.

A little bit of back story on the gun. It was found in my Dad’s uncles closet after he passed away. We were aware of a number of other firearms he had but there was never any mention of this one so we just assumed it came from his wife’s family.

I conserved it to the best of my ability and it does fire (don’t want to mess it up), is there any value in getting it professionally conserved or should I just keep it oiled up and as free of rust as I can?

If it was my rifle, I would have the set trigger cleaned & adjusted (repaired), and then leave the rest of the rifle as is, just keeping it cleaned a very lightly oiled.
