I bought a 1921 manufactured Model 1895 in nice, original condition.  I’m curious about a brass marker about the size of a nickel on the butt stock with the number “9”.  It’s raised from the wood surface, not embedded.  The marker looks old like the rest of the rifle. 1895-full.jpgImage Enlarger

Anybody know what that might be telling me?

This looks to me to be a rack number for accountability purposes.  Now for whom is a very good question and one I doubt anyone can answer at this point in time.  Could be a police department, a mine, a railroad or other business, etc.  My opinion only.  Tim
