Need a little help! Did they ever make a 45-90 with 20 in,barrel? Half octogon half round gun dealer swears they did! I think he want to make a sale. LoL
It is certainly possible for it to be original, but as mentioned, it needs to authenticated with a CFM factory letter.

To the best of my knowledge there never was a half round short rifle. If it has a 20″ barrel I would be troubled by it.
I would not be willing to make that bet. In fact, it is much more likely that a few of them were actually made than not.

The William L. Porter research lists 113 20″ barreled 1886’s. It does not list caliber or type of barrel. I guess one of the 113 could be a 45-90.
In the late 90’s I was offered a pricey 20″ 86 at Las Vegas by a large dealer, I think Pete Shavers. He gave me a list of guns, I looked but can’t find it. From memory I’m thinking 45-90 full octagon. T/R

Here’s a 20″ Extra heavy in 40-65 that’s been at the Cody Show a few years back and went back and forth between a couple collectors some of us know. Talk about rarity, it’s quite an interesting specimen.
If you run out of ammo, it makes for a very effective club. This is assuming the other man has run out of ammo as well.

I appreciated his discussion of, “heavy” and, “extra heavy” barrels in this article.

I would have loved to talk to the person who ordered this rifle – just what they were thinking – what their point was. Longer barreled extra heavy rifles make more sense – but 20 inches – extra heavy? Again, would have loved to know what he was after.
