I need a little help and hope this is the right place.

Is there anyone here that is somewhat familiar with late 60s Winchester model 70s?

If so, why would Winchester apply a G prefix (1969ish) to a rifle that was originally serialized in 1967?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Thank you Clarence for the link and help.

Im tracking the details, as well as one can, regarding the G prefix and the confusion it can sometimes cause (when it started and the early 90s CRFs).  The rifle im asking about is significantly out of sequence and i believe serialized in 1967 (per Win DOM FAQ link).  The G on this rifle doesn’t seem to match the numbers so my assumption is it was added after the sn.  In fact, i have seen a 1965 serial number with the G prefix.

Im just wondering if anyone knows if Win added the G to returns or maybe rifles that sat a long time (for whatever reason) and weren’t released until after the 68 GCA became law.

Again, i really appreciate the help.

That would make sense, because by accident or for other unknown reasons some guns got “lost” in the warehouse for extended periods.

I would figure that would be the case in the early days, but by the 1960s & 70s I find such a theory more doubtful, but plausible.

Sincerely,

Maverick
