Based on the current results of my research survey, Winchester discontinued the Saddle Ring in April, 1932, at the same time as the Nickel Steel barrel with the lug style front sight. When the new Proof Steel barrels with a ramp style front sight were introduced (in April of 1932), the Saddle ring become a special order option. In late August of 1942 (when Winchester temporarily halted production of the Model 94 to support WW II), the Saddle ring was completely eliminated.
Again, based on my research survey, it was in June of 1929 when the Eastern Carbine production numbers began to exceed the SRC production numbers. For several months prior (early half of 1929), Winchester sold a substantial number of Carbines with a large headed filler screw installed in the saddle ring stud hole, and then in June 1929, they began eliminating the drilled & tapped saddle ring stud hole on large batches of Carbines. There were still a number of smaller batches of receivers manufactured with the drilled & tapped stud hole. The following are the Model 94 production numbers I have verified thus far for the year 1929;
1. Sporting Rifles = 76
2. SRCs = 96
3. Eastern Carbines = 171

My notes indicate that Winchester ordered the elimination of sling rings as a standard feature in July 1929. This is the year that Winchester filed for bankruptcy and lots of production change took place in the 1928/1929 period. It took a while for inventories to work off so there is quite a mixture of SRCs and “eastern” carbine in the 1929-1932 period including the plugged receivers that Bert mentioned.

I assume that you are talking about the pre-1964 1894/94 Carbines or maybe just the ones marked 1894?
I think that I have a couple of later model 94 SRC’s including one named “Antique” supposedly made in 1965.
These may have been special ordered with the ring, but I’m not sure.
Bert, do you have Model 94 SRC, serial number 1040794 in your survey? Jessica says Feb. 5, 1929 for this one, clearly a standard carbine with saddle ring, carbine butt plate, nickel steel marked barrel, Marbles 94C stud type front sight, 95L folding rear sight, Lyman DA tang, 30 WCF. I bought this 30 years ago at the old Dry Creek Hardware in Fredericksburg, Texas.

No, I did not have it, but I do now.
Thanks,
