Recall a post a while back that indicated original studs were always oriented horizontally on SRC’s

Correct… factory installed SR studs were always oriented to allow the ring to moved sideways (forward or back versus up & down) on the receiver frame.

The reproduction ring and stud shown in post 17, are correct as made by Winchester.   The concave base on the stud was an ingenious design that Winchester incorporated in this fixture.   With this concave base, the stud could be tightened in the correct horizontal position with the receiver.   If the base was flat as on many of the reproductions,  it would be difficult to align the stud with the receiver.   A flat based stud against the flat side of a receiver,  can only be turned so far.

I have a 1920 SRC missing just the ring. I see I can buy a replacement ring but what’s the best way to install it?

I assume the stud just unscrews from the receiver but then what?

thanks,

Rob

Ring has to be opened wide enough to slip one end into hole.  Not easy, but can be done with 2 crescent wrenches on either side of split in ring, which you spread in opposite directions to open ring, then close same way.  Try to find a YouTube video showing how it’s done.

I have a question:  why were so many original rings removed?

Because they rattled & clinked when carrying them on hunting excursions.  That is also why you see a fair number of them wrapped in leather or similar material.

Even though I think they look cool, I have to admit there was no upside.  That is, they filled no practical purpose.  And yes, they did clink and rattle.  I was always a deep woods close range hunter.  And those whitetail deer have enormous ears!

Yes they do Steve, I won’t even hunt with a sling. Every little rattle is a dead give away for those willey old bucks! But a 33 wcf or the ever popular 32 special can generally reach out and get them to stop!
