I just tuned in to RIA latest premier catalog and noticed this SRC. Just so happens to be one of the ones on my dream list. But I am curious about it. It letters as “serial number applied in1898”. But has a blued receiver. Should be a CCH at that age. But received in ware house in 1905 and shipped in 1908! I am perplexed. P.S. not to alarm the high rollers because not a chance in hell I can afford it at this point!

Tom,

All I know about the 1886 SLR is, as you imply, Winchester didn’t make many of them.

If you cannot relish your dinner without one but the cost is prohibitive,  would I be guilty of a liberty if I suggested you consider a bit less expensive but still hard to find and desirable Browning 1886 SLR 45-70, one built in the late nineteen Eighties.

I had my hands on a brand new one of these and foolishly turned it down.

Tom-

Appears to be an good example of a receiver that simply stayed in the tray for awhile. See it more with custom shop guns but so far it seems plausible. Let’s see what the sharp eyed experts think about the rest of this attractive carbine! Moot point for me, RIA won’t accept pocket lint for payment.

I believe it was serial numbered in 1898, well before the finish was applied, and, by that time, receivers were blued.  Note the forge striations, sharp edges, proper hue of bluing, and the right degree of wear from the saddle ring.

i would be proud to own this one!

I see nothing of concern on that very nice SRC.  Keep in mind that that Case color finishing was discontinued in 1901, and it was only standard for the solid frame Sporting rifles.  All ELWs and Take Downs were blued as standard.

Tom – that’s ok – luckily it’s not a .45-90!

Now if I guy did want a .45-90 SRC, there is this nice offering from Tom Selleck:

And if that doesn’t quench your .45-90 thirst, here’s another one from Tom:

I wouldn’t throw either one of those out of the truck. That rifle is stunning.
