Hey everyone,
Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name’s Chad, and I’ve been around firearms most of my life, mainly from the hunting and security side— but I’ve always been fascinated with Western American history. My grandfather is a collector and self proclaimed “western historian” and I guess that’s rubbed off on me. I travel west annual to hunt and in the past been involved in the PRCA with rodeo still being a part of my family’s life. Growing up as a kid I only ever wanted to be two things…a football player or cowboy. Neither came true but one can still dream, right?!
I’m here mainly to learn, connect, and enjoy being part of the community. From my employment, I recently came across a Winchester and Hotchkiss cartridge board and I started to delve down wormholes which led me to the discovery of the forum. Within just the past couple of days I’ve connected with a few members from WTS/WTB threads and they were both very nice fellas so I decided to join WACA.
Looking forward to seeing what you all have and hearing some good stories. Thanks for letting me join and hopefully I’ll bump into some of you at the Cleveland show in September!

Humble and curious. Always happy to chat.
Welcome from me as well!
Anthony is quite correct – many of us would enjoy photos of cartridge boards.
You mentioned Hotchkiss – I assume you have seen Kevin’s project thread?
Great intro – Welcome!
Looking forward to having you here.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I did come across Anthony’s thread and buzzed through it. What a find! It seemed like quite an adventure to figure out the origins, caliber, etc. I’ll continue to keep track of that story.
I’ll definitely post some photos of the board, I just need to grab them from our curator. It’s not a Double “W”. Honestly the only info I could find was from a Miller and Miller auction press release from 2021, that claimed origin of 1884. I do have a call out to Cody to see if I could drum up any more info.

Welcome, Chad! Make plans to attend our Cody show sometime soon and be sure to allot at least a day for the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, or Cody Firearms Museum. Both are invaluable experiences for the novice Winchester collector, IMHO.

Welcome to the sickness, it only gets worse the deeper you go:)
if you need guest passes for September please let me know…. If you want to attend the IX show in June your welcome to also, just let me know I I can get you a guest pass- it’s not the WACA show, but it’ll beatn OGCA show- and a display one to boot.
get ready to learn a bunch
Chad,
Take Bill up on the opportunity to visit the IX Center, as you proclaimed you would try to. You won’t regret it. I was in you’re shoes several years ago with my boy’s in their sports activities and College ball, as it allowed us to visit and travel the Country, and always seemed to pick up another Winchester or two! Great memories, as it it did hamper some regular attendance as far as the local shows went, but the OGCA, has always been one of my favorites.
Like Steve said, Kevin’s project thread, on the Hotchkiss, that many of us find interesting, in all likelihood will find this cartridge board interesting also.
I’m glad that you we’re able to post a picture of the 1884 Winchester Cartridge board, as they’re pretty intriguing, to many of us.What a great example! It sure looks all original and unmolested to me from you’re picture! I never get tired of seeing these.
Any picture of the back, with possibilities of a number or information from the factory?
A few interesting links in case you haven’t seen them, for comparison, or just plain enjoyment.

Not the same board, but one of our Distinguished and very knowledgeable members, Mark Douglas, (Cinnebar), here took the time to show this great piece that he will try to bring up to date, and make as close to original as he can. The, “W”, or the, “Double, “W”, seem to be a little more common, as they are all very hard to come by, and pricey.

Anthony – I did catch Mark’s video when I was scrubbing the web looking for info (another reason I joined). The back “appears” to have a piece of plywood over it, it doesn’t look original to my ignorant eyes, so we can’t really see any of the original markings. Thanks for the icollector link too, I did not come across that myself…that’s at least 3 or 4 now in the wild that folks have pointed out or I’ve found through various collector and auction sites. It would be neat to follow the individual pieces through their journey.
Bo – Thanks! Hope our paths cross at some point.

The board may have lost its original paper backing that covered the back wood and tie wires. It wouldn’t surprised me if it had been remounted or even reframed in its past.

Chad,
Glad that you enjoyed viewing the link, I posted, as we can never have too much information on these things. I’m glad you we’re able to see Mark’s video and his work, as he’s an asset to this Association.
Thanks for posting the back picture also. Maverick could be right about his assumptions, as we all agree that it’s truly a nice piece.
I was down you’re way on March 7, and 8th.,(Ohio Cartridge Show), about an hour South for me, as I’m between Akron, and Cleveland. Their next show will be, 10/3,4/2025, at the Courtyard by Marriott. Not a big show, by any means, but some hard to find stuff in case you’re looking. Many of the guy’s just got back from the International show in St. Louis, (SLICS), where cartridge collectors go to, from all around the World.
I’m sure many would love to see you’re board, or even pictures of it, in case you’re looking for other opinions, or further authentication, as it looks great my amateur eyes.
