Have to ship a 94 carbine and would like to get a proper fitting, inexpensive (if possible) plastic hard case for shipping. I’ll encase this in a cardboard box, but I’m seeing most cases under $50 are 48-50” long and 14-15” wide for a scoped rifle. Would love to find a padded 40” by 10” hard case. Anyone ever go down this rabbit hole? Ps. I rarely ship rifles, hence the confusion.
Any help is appreciated.

Before you buy anything, go look at what Cameron Packaging of Lima Ohio offers as its Custom Rifle Kit. It consists of a heavy cardboard outer box, three layers of cross-linked foam inserts cut to fit tightly in the box. There is also a large swatch of anti-rust impregnated sheeting, in which the rifle is to be wrapped.
- The rifle is laid out on the middle layer of foam and its outline cut out with a razor knife or, more easily, with a hot knife. [Cross-linked foam is what marine docking fenders are made of.]
- The middle layer of foam is placed over the bottom layer.
- The rifle is wrapped in the anti-rust sheeting and placed into the outlined and cut cavity of the middle layer.
- The top layer is placed over the middle layer and the three-layer sandwich is fitted into the box, which is sealed – preferably with hot glue and shipping tape.
These kits are not cheaper than the plastic case you propose to use, but I’ve never had a firearm damaged in the twenty years I’ve used them. Even when the box itself was damaged.

What I have done over the years when returning an engraved rifle to a client is buy a inexpensive ,about $50$, hard case on Amazon. I get it postage free and it comes in a cardboard box that I use when shipping the gun to the client Serves two purposes, cheap shipping container and it give the owner a hardcase to protect his investment.

Martin’s method is less expensive than Cameron’s – I have to order 4 or 6 at a time to spread the UPS Ground carriage fee from Ohio to Texas. The last order worked out to about $57 USD per kit. J
I’ve received the last couple of long guns I’ve bought, shipped in the manner Martin uses and they came safely to hand. I might throw in a couple packs of silica gel if I used that method, in case the box got shipped by mistake to Outer Slobovia.
