Dave,
That is my choice as well… I keep mine loaded with No. 4 Tactical Buck (6-rounds of it).

Hunting loads cause less legal troubles. It lends to the idea that the ammo wasn’t bought specifically to shoot someone. Duck loads use #2’s. I prefer to use my hunting shotgun that I have shot hundreds of boxes of ammo through. I can operate this gun in my sleep and that may be about how you end up using it.

Chuck,
I do not live in state that would try to prosecute me for defending myself or family in my home. Therefore, I am purposefully using a Law Enforcement load in my home defense weapon. Those (27) .24 caliber lead balls traveling at 1350 fps are positively lethal !! Bird shot is not always a lethal load, especially as the distance increases between you and the perpetrator.
In regards to my weapon of choice, a 20-inch Riot Gun is a whole lot easier to use inside a house versus a 30-inch game gun. The nice thing about my Model 1897 is the slam-fire capability… and it is real hoot to do it during practice sessions. The other nice feature is the exposed hammer, which I leave in the half-cock (safety) position with a round in the chamber… no racking a round from the magazine into the chamber to alert the perp that he is about to meet his maker.

Now that’s what I’m talkin about Bert. I’ll take two 1897’s please & thank you …

I haven’t had to purchase anything recently to protect the home from a civil unrest scenario. The go-to firearm is an FN Self Loading Police MKI w/ 9 rounds of #00- kind of heavy but when the adrenaline is pumping, you don’t even notice it. Only had to grab it once in the last 4 years but was glad to have it. I learned overseas that nothing clears a room better than a shotgun…
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

The old 1897 in addition to its other feature such as slam fire capability, leaving the chamber loaded without the hammer spring under tension they also have the magazine unloading feature that allows the gun to quickly empty the mag tube with the push of a button. No need to work the action and take a chance of an accidental discharge. It is truly an amazing firearm.
Dave,
Only the “E” series Model 1897s have the magazine unloading feature. I have Pre-C, C, and D series guns, and they all require cycling the round through the chamber to empty the gun. Fortunately, the majority of Model 1897s were “E” series guns.

Colt Detective .38 with quick loader for 12 shots real fast. If he’s in the house I don’t want to make a big mess and it’s easy to handle single handed and tuck into bed with Me.

I love my old, and old-style guns, but I’d go to my M-forgery and 1911 in trouble. The muscle memory is there, for shooting, disassembly/assembly, and immediate action drills. I know there are better weapons out there, but it would take a lot of practice/training on a new platform to overcome 45 years of familiarity.
As to prices, I’ve read articles that consumer prices are at a five year low. I’m sure that does not apply to Covid 19 guns and ammo, but I don’t think it’s even happening with modern Uberti/Henry/Winchester/Colt, and whatnot. Wish it was. I don’t want to wish ill on those folks but it would sure be nice to see a market dump to keep the doors open and employees working. I think much of it is over-priced, with black powder and some cheap SAAs being the exception.

My hunting gun is a semi auto with a 26″ barrel. I guarantee I can hit the safety and out fire any 1897 riot gun. I love my 1897 riot gun but the only advantage it has is that it has a larger magazine capacity. The 1897 can’t use 3″ shells. Even here in California we can protect ourselves and shoot an intruder. But anybody can sue anyone at any time for any reason. You don’t have to be guilty to get sued. At 20′ or less all the BB’s will hit your target. Some loads are faster than 1,500 fps. No matter where you live you better not shoot someone in the back, like when they see you are armed and they are trying to run away or outside your house.
The most important thing is that you shoot what you are most comfortable with and are sure it won’t malfunction.
Many argue that shot sizes ranging from 00 to #4 buck are the only options for home defense, but #2 shot has several advantages. The higher pellet count allows for more wound channels and a decreased likelihood of over penetration. Steel is slightly lighter than lead, which means steel may penetrate less into you target in a home defense situation. This could lead to fewer accidents involving neighbors or people outside, should something get out of hand (#2 shot withing 15 feet is still devastating).
Haven’t seen a run on the guns in Virginia but ammo is non-existent. I reload almost all of my rifle ammo and am good there but I don’t bother reloading pistol since I mostly shoot 9mm NATO ball, it’s normally dirt cheap, and I don’t need super precision. I can’t find 9mm in any variety in any meaningful quantity anywhere that hasn’t more than doubled in price. I shoot a boat load of 9mm each year… really wanted to get out this past weekend and shoot but didn’t want to touch what’s left of my stash.

Try thisThere is another website that does this but I can’t find it.
Thanks Chuck! That’s a slick website… I’m stocking up good now 🙂
I’ve tried those aggregator websites in the past but they never seem to work well. This one works great! Prices are still up but much, much better than the normal places I hit.
