With patients a replacement barrel could be found. I used to pick for a restorer and I found stuff, eventually, for some unusual guns. PM me and I might know someone that could help with matching the finish after you find a donor barrel. There are still those out their that can make a new barrel too. Aging back a new barrel is an art but can be done.
Recently on the long range shooting forum I visit we were talking about the importance of checking out a gun when the last shot did not sound right. A case that has no powder still can push a bullet into the barrel.
Really glad your Grandson is OK.

Yes, but nothing like the art of polishing & bluing. Takes some care & patience, & you have to have an “eye,” but actually not so hard for an oct brl, esp. before attached to rcvr. I’ve done it with 0000 steel wool & Clover abrasive compound. Main thing is to make sure brl has NOT been given a high-polish blue–hard to work with that.
Clarence, I just happen to have Clover abrasive. My father used it to lap in valves and seats on gas engines.
Also looked at WINCHESTER BARRELS. com and realized the quality of polishing doesn’t come near to my barrel. The bluing also would have to be redone.
I’m still weighing my options. Thanks. Don

Brl ought to be rust-blued, but quite a few doing that. Even how-to videos on You Tube! You really need to be talking to someone in the BUSINESS of restoration, who would know where to get parts & services like rust-bluing. Hoping to find original brl in right caliber & cond a very long shot unless you’re very lucky.
Turnbull does excellent work, but I am not sure if they do “aging” type restorations as you are seeking with this repair.
Someone who does is Mark Douglas of Cinnabar. He is who I would contact for the type of repair you need. Mark is the also our VP of the WACA. He has a very good YouTube channel and one video I’ve seen of his covers a repair just like the type you are looking for.

Very sorry to see that happened but glad nobody was hurt.
