For those who aren’t 01 or 03 licensees and may have seen this phony letter posted on a dealer’s door,

BATFE confirms it is a hoax. The agency sent out an email blast this morning to that effect.

I suspect this is an enemy of America’s work.

If you see it on Facebook or other media, challenge it. DHS_Ltr_To_FFLs_260209_090600.jpgImage Enlarger

Wow, got the call from BATFE this morning (T-mobile ID’s as possible SCAM) but haven’t read the e-mail yet. On the surface seems well-written but obviously not credible.

I also got the call today. Goes to show that with AI and other resources available, you can not believe anything you read or see. Independent, verifiable proof is required. And perhaps that is not always reliable.

I personally believe it was written by an American because other English speakers have trouble with American patterns of speech. The letter also displays some familiarity with American Government jargon.

However, i also believe the motive for the letter is to create unrest and stir up anti-government sentiment among those Americans of the right who might be inclined to violence in extreme circumstances. It has been documented in the past that several foreign nations engage in this sort of gaming to distract and weaken the United States. Because the notion that a letter like this could cause rioting in America is more than a little naive,  that fact argues in favor of foreign inluence.

My thought:  foreign money to a cell of radical American.9

Well the very first sentence should have clued anyone that the letter was Fraud. I hope they catch whomever was doing this.

I think the first sentence was crafted to enrage its target audience — a literary thumb in the eye.

To me, that would be the mindset of someone not familiar with the nuances of American culture; someone who gets his ideas about gun owners and sportsmen only from the political rhetoric of the American hard left — from a distance.

Perhaps it is to give the devil his due, but I don’t think our domestic terrorists are so stupid any would draft a letter aimed at a non-existent, easy-to-manipulate,  cartoon “gun nut”.

My take is it was drafted by a foreigner, perhaps edited for American speech patterns and government jargon. Then posted by some Houston Antifa groupies.

Sometimes I think we overestimate our enemies.

I think some of you over estimate the intelligence of many people out there. I know many people who would be ready to form a local militia to fight a government out of control if they read this letter. At gun shows I hear guys believing, and repeating, every unconfirmed anti-gun rumor that pops up. To many people the recent activities of ICE lend credibility to the letter.

Well,  you’ve described the target audience, I guess. The danger lies not in the many but in the one or two.

I remember the “militia craze” when men (and some women) dressed in paramilitary uniform would have a recruiting desk at gun shows.

Of course this was before the Supremes handed down the critical Second Amendment decisions confirming it was an individual, not a collective right, and that “bear” meant carry outside the home.

After that, the impetus for forming private militias evaporated. I thought most of those people were harmless but I met one or two who I thought might be looking for trouble and were worrisome.

There have been occasions in South Texas after hurricanes when ad hoc groups of armed homeowners got together to protect against looters because law enforcement was overwhelmed.  But they did not don uniforms.

There are two things I truly believe make the average, patriotic and honest American nervous — justifiably so based on World history.

1. Unsanctioned groups of armed, uniformed civilians acting as a paramilitary.

2. Masked government agents. (Spare me the lecture. Several close family members are in law enforcement and I’ve heard all the reasons. It’s a very bad idea and the late Jeff Cooper was right about this.)

There are good and bad things about our virtually instantaneous forms of personal and public communication. But I believe the good outweighs the bad. it’s easier to spread malicious rumor but it is also very helpful in quashing it before total chaos. And it makes official oppression much harder.

Just my opinion.
