Unless Butterfield & Butterfield held two separate auctions in the same month (which is highly unlikely), something is not adding up… the Butterfield & Butterfield auction took place on May 30 (Session 1) & May 31 (Session 2) 1994 (in San Francisco). and it featured the estate of Joseph W. Shields Jr. The Specialists in charge were Greg Martin and James Ferrell. I have the hard copy auction catalog.

I searched Butterfield and they had other auctions in May but none I could find on the 3rd, they were for other types of items like art etc. just like Morphy does.
