Did Winchester use Cosmoline on their guns?

I don’t know, but if so, I’d hate to be the dealer or store clerk who had to remove that nasty stuff!  Since Cosmoline was intended not only for long term storage (years, not months), but exposure to the worst climatic conditions, it’s hard to see a need for it in their ordinary trade.  Perhaps for shipments destined for tropical countries like Brazil?  Could see it being mandated by US Ordnance for M1 production during WWII.

I would imagine all such military purchased firearms of Winchester make, at one time could have been stored in Cosmoline.

Reminds me a story, my dad and uncle both were given 1911s when they were teenagers as payment for doing some work on a old guys house. Supposedly behind the old man’s house they worked on there was a shed where the old man had a 55 gallon drum stacked to the brim with 1911s.

I used didn’t know what to think of the story, until I found out in fact the U.S. Military did use 58 gallon shipping drums.

Some people have told me my dad had to be full of it, but the guys house was in Bossier City, Louisiana, which is the backyard for Barksdale Air Force Base.

So who knows!

Sincerely,

Maverick
